Barcelona faced unexpected challenges in their 3-2 victory over fourth-division club Barbastro during the third round of the Copa del Rey on Sunday. Despite securing a spot in the round of 16, the Catalan club’s performance was notably lackluster, prompting coach Xavi Hernández to acknowledge the unnecessary struggles. Xavi expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s a game in which you can score several goals, but when you don’t, you end up suffering more than expected.”

The match highlighted Barcelona’s recent struggles, coming off hard-fought wins in the Spanish league against Almeria and Las Palmas. The victory against Barbastro broke a three-game winless streak for Barcelona across all competitions. Despite Fermín López and Robert Lewandowski contributing to the scoreline, Barbastro’s Adriá de Mesa and Marc Prat Serrano kept the contest close, emphasizing Barcelona’s vulnerability. Additionally, Barcelona forward João Félix had a goal disallowed for offside. The game also saw Xavi strategically resting several key players ahead of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, Barcelona defender Íñigo Martínez, who recently returned from injury, had to be replaced due to another injury, adding to the team’s concerns.
