New Delhi, February 03, 2024: In a historic announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that veteran politician Lal Krishna Advani will be honored with the prestigious Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. Born in Karachi, Advani migrated to India post-Partition, settling in Bombay, and played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s political landscape.

Having joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of fourteen in 1941, Advani’s political journey saw him become a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, the precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) founded by iconic leader Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

Advani’s political career took a significant turn in 1977 when he assumed the roles of Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha following the Janata Party’s victory in the general elections. Over the years, he became one of the founding members of the BJP, serving as its president three times.

The year 1989 marked his debut as a Lok Sabha member, and his leadership played a crucial role in the BJP’s ascent in national politics. In 1999, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed the government, Advani served as the Minister of Home Affairs and the Deputy Prime Minister.

Recognizing his exceptional contributions, LK Advani was previously honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2015, India’s second-highest civilian award. His role in the BJP’s rise to prominence cannot be understated, especially his iconic Ram Rath Yatra in 1990, advocating for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. This journey from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya gained widespread support, leading to the BJP becoming the second-largest party in the 1991 general elections.
