Champai Soren to Assume Office as Jharkhand CM Today, Floor Test Scheduled in 10 Days

Champai Soren, leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, is set to become Jharkhand’s Chief Minister today after Governor Radhakrishnan’s invitation. A floor test is scheduled within the next 10 days.

Ranchi, February 02, 2024 – In a significant political development, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren is all set to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand today, following an invitation extended by Governor CP Radhakrishnan. The late-night invitation, which came after political uncertainties post the resignation of former CM Hemant Soren on Wednesday, has put Champai Soren in the spotlight.

Champai Soren, a staunch loyalist of Hemant Soren, has been tasked with proving his majority through a floor test within the next 10 days. Earlier, he had urged the governor to expedite the government formation process amid the prevailing confusion in the state.

Accompanied by a delegation of JMM-led coalition members, Champai Soren held discussions with the governor over government formation, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution. In a letter handed over to Radhakrishnan, the coalition stressed the urgency of establishing a popular government.

“We stand united. Our alliance is very strong. No one can break it,” asserted Champai Soren after receiving assurances from the governor regarding a prompt decision on their request for government formation.

In a bid to showcase their coalition’s strength, the JMM released a video featuring 43 legislators out of the 81-member Jharkhand assembly. Additionally, there were initial plans for the coalition MLAs to fly to Telangana amidst the political crisis, but the chartered planes hired for the purpose were grounded due to poor visibility.

“We could not go because of poor visibility. We will fight against them (BJP)…” stated Jharkhand minister Banna Gupta, highlighting the challenges faced by the coalition amidst ongoing political developments. The situation remains dynamic as Jharkhand awaits the swearing-in ceremony of Champai Soren and the subsequent floor test that will determine the stability of the new government.
