Mamaearth co-founder Ghazal Alagh faces backlash for comparing her Mumbai-Nashik flight to the Maldives on social media. Netizens express discontent, deeming the scenic comparison unnecessary and belated amidst ongoing debates.
New Delhi, January 19, 2024 – In a recent social media post, Ghazal Alagh, co-founder of Mamaearth, found herself at the receiving end of criticism after comparing the scenic beauty of her Mumbai to Nashik flight to that of the Maldives. Alagh took to X to share an aerial shot from her trip, asking her followers, ‘If I told you I was in the Maldives right now, you’d believe me, right?’

The post, made a day ago, has garnered nearly 7.4 lakh views and close to 1,900 likes, but it has also stirred a wave of discontent among netizens. Some users deemed the comparison unnecessary, while others suggested that Alagh was late to comment on the Maldives row debate.
“I have been to the Maldives, and I won’t believe you that it is even close to the Maldives. This is beautiful, but let’s not draw a comparison of everything with the Maldives,” commented one user. Another added, “A few days too late, Ghazal, the trend moved on to something else.”
Critics were quick to point out that the scenery in the video “doesn’t look like the Maldives at all” and expressed their dissatisfaction with the comparison.
The controversy surrounding the Maldives row erupted on January 2 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep sparked a viral trend online. The situation escalated when now-suspended deputy ministers of the Maldives government reshared images of PM Modi’s visit and made derogatory remarks. This led to a call to boycott the Maldives, with various Indian celebrities expressing their support for the cause.
