Japan Airlines (JAL) has reported that a passenger plane may have collided with another aircraft either on a runway or taxiway after landing, as per Kyodo. Footage allegedly captured by a passenger reveals flames erupting from beneath the aircraft, filling the cabin with smoke, although AFP has not yet verified the authenticity of the video. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is actively investigating the incident, according to Kyodo. Television footage depicts rescue workers spraying the aircraft as flames emerge from windows, eventually consuming the entire plane. Burning debris on the runway has led to the closure of the airport to traffic, with over 70 fire engines deployed, as reported by NHK. This rare incident marks Japan’s first serious commercial aviation accident in decades, prompting recollections of the country’s worst aviation disaster in 1985, involving a JAL jumbo jet crash that claimed the lives of 520 passengers and crew in central Gunma region – one of the world’s deadliest single-flight plane crashes.
