The transport workers’ unions in Tamil Nadu have declared an indefinite strike commencing Tuesday, citing dissatisfaction with the state government’s alleged lack of consideration for their demands. Following unsuccessful negotiations with the MK Stalin-led government on Monday, a coalition of unions, including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), presented a list of demands. These demands encompass the signing of the 15th wage revision agreement to increase pay, a revision of dearness allowance for pensioners, and the filling of vacancies in bus driver and conductor positions. CITU leader A Soundararajan expressed frustration, highlighting the government’s refusal to accept any of the transport workers’ demands, characterizing it as an “unjust answer and an unfair stand.” Among the key demands is the release of Dearness Allowance pending for eight years to pensioners, with Soundararajan emphasizing that they are not seeking a salary hike but requesting the release of the due DA.

As tensions escalate, the CITU leader has urged the government to schedule discussions for enhanced wages under the 15th wage revision pact. He questions the government’s right to demand the cancellation of the strike when even this basic demand is met with resistance. The strike assumes added significance as it coincides with the approaching Tamil festival ‘Pongal,’ raising concerns about disrupting the festive rush. This confluence of labor unrest and a major cultural celebration underscores the urgency for both parties to engage in meaningful dialogue and find a resolution that addresses the legitimate concerns of the transport workers while ensuring a smooth and joyful celebration for the public during the upcoming festival.
