UK News, February 17, 2024: The UK braces for a wintry onslaught as the Met Office issues a heavy snow alert, cautioning of up to 25cm of snowfall in an Arctic blast sweeping across the nation. Amber weather warnings for snow have been raised for regions in northern England and north Wales, while yellow alerts for both rain and snow are expected to be widespread.

Thursday’s forecast paints a picture of widespread snow and rain across significant swathes of the country. The Met Office has sounded the alarm with amber warnings specifically targeting parts of northern England and north Wales, alongside yellow alerts covering a mix of rain and snow throughout all four nations. In particular, high ground areas like the Peak District and the southern Pennines could see substantial snow accumulations, with up to 25cm expected between noon and 6pm on Thursday.

Separate warnings for snow and ice have been issued for north Wales and Shropshire, with 10-15cm of snow anticipated in these regions between 8am and 3pm.

Met Office’s chief meteorologist, Kathryn Chalk, emphasized the importance of staying updated with the latest forecasts and warnings. She advised travelers to plan their journeys meticulously, allowing for longer travel times, especially in snowy conditions. Additionally, she urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are adequately prepared for the wintry weather, including checking tires, oil levels, and screen wash.
