World Cancer Day was first observed on February 4, 2000, during the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. The Paris Charter, born from this summit, set forth a mission to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services, and raise awareness globally. This annual day serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against cancer and the collective effort needed to combat this formidable foe.

As we enter the final year of the “Close the cancer gap” campaign from 2022 to 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, emphasizes the theme for this year as ‘Together, we challenge those in power.’ The theme calls for global leaders to prioritize and invest in cancer prevention and care, striving towards a just and cancer-free world.

According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN), there were 19.3 million incident cancer cases worldwide in 2020, solidifying cancer as the second leading cause of death. The concerning projection for India indicates a staggering 2 million cases by 2040, marking a 57.5% increase from 2020. Early detection remains pivotal for survival, and initiatives like World Cancer Day play a crucial role in spreading awareness about the signs and symptoms.
